The Roy Hamilton Collection

Roy Roy2

Chella is proud to present an extraordinary collection of fabrics from a design industry original. Our first ever designer featured collection is the brainchild of Roy Hamilton, designer of exclusive ceramics, sculptural and textural interior elements and fabrics for over sixty years.

From the outset, Roy was determined to pursue his passion for product design, first studying at the Textilefachschule in Zurich, Switzerland. A jacquard weaving mill in the north of England came next, and eventually led to Liberty of London’s office in New York when he developed a weekend hobby working with clay.   The ceramics won out as Roy established his ‘handwriting’ with slip-decorated soft edged geometric designs, interpretations of which form the basis of

The Roy Hamilton Collection for Chella.

Roy explains:  “I took a different concept in working with Chella:  starting with a color palette of six neutral tones.   Each color way covers the same six designs, scaled from small to large.    These six designs include Screen Shot (2750), a broken all-over textured design that coordinates and works with all or any of the five other designs.   Everything inter-relates”.

Today, Roy, a self-described potter and celebrated ceramicist, creates proprietary collections of vessels in his Brooklyn studio. This season, Roy has infused original textiles with patterns from his exclusive ceramic pieces.

Screen Shot (2750) employs subtle graphics in an allover texture, creating a cinematic shadow effect.

Corner Deck (2600) plays to the boundaries with overstitched layers accenting a neutral field.

Angular (2700) puts the artisan’s confident hand-drawn geometry on display.

Overlap (2650) offers insight into traditional hand-weaving, showcasing the graphic relationship between warp and weft.

Shadow Cast (2550) poses the question is shadow form or is form shadow?

Tiger Scan (2500) with its traditional damask structure captures the tiger in motion reversing its stripes.
